The Curacao Island

Approximately 4500 years ago, the first humans set foot on Curacao. They came by canoe from what is now Venezuela. It’s inhabitants today have a multiracial character and consist of descendants of African slaves, Indians, European colonists, and later immigrants from the Caribbean, South America, India, Eastern Europe and the Middle East. The Antillean culture has emerged from many diverse cultures.

The island has also changed from an agricultural to an industrial society. Since the fifties, the increase in tourism has contributed to more rapid modernization. The literacy rate is very high. Most Curacaoleans speak Papiamento, Dutch, English, and Spanish.

The island is the capital of the Netherlands Antilles and an autonomous part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The Kingdom of the Netherlands is responsible for Defense, Foreign Affairs, and appeals through the Supreme Court.

Curacao is located 1300 kilometers north of the equator, and is 61 kilometers long and varies in width from 5 to 14 kilometers. It has a current population of approximately
